The controversial national security law which will require telecommunications companies to retain customers’ phone numbers and computer metadata will come into force on Tuesday October 13.

Australians’ internet data will be kept for two years.

Security agencies will be able to access the data when they prove it is necessary to an investigation, with a warrant still required.

More than $130 million over three years was allocated in this year’s Federal Budget to help telecommunication companies meet the cost of compliance.

Telcos have expressed concern about how funding will be distributed and some consumers are worried about the costs phone companies and internet service providers will pass on.
