Energex warns of scammers beware they are clever

Scammers are ramping up their dodgy ways with multiple reports of unscrupulous people calling homeowners claiming to be from Energex and digging for personal information.

People and in some cases robocalls falsely claiming to be from Energex have been seeking personal information such as Medicare numbers and driver’s license details.

Residents of Brisbane, Moreton Bay Region, Ipswich, Logan and the Gold Coast have reported receiving these calls from scammers who often prey on the most vulnerable people in the community.

According to an Energex spokesperson the electricity distributor will never call or knock on doors out of the blue seeking anyone’s personal information or discuss power bills.

In some cases, scammers misrepresenting themselves as Energex have been offering fake discounts on energy bills.

“Energex is not a retailer and does not issue electricity bills so we will never call a homeowner seeking any kind of personal details such as banking information,” they said.

“On the rare occasions when we may need to contact a customer directly, we’ll never seek this sort of private information.  Furthermore, all Energex staff carry identification cards at all times and will present it upon request when dealing with the community.

“If anyone does receive a call or a visit from someone claiming to be from Energex wanting to talk about electricity bills or requesting personal details we recommend ending the conversation immediately and either phone us on 13 12 53 or contact ScamWatch at scamwatch.gov.au
