Building digital inclusion and literacy at Moreton Bay Libraries

Moreton Bay Regional Council has purchased four Plextalk devices to assist people with a disability thanks to a Micro Grant from the State Library of Queensland.

Spokesperson for Lifestyle and Amenity Denise Sims said the tool could read aloud texts from electronic devices like CD and USB as well as text and word files.

The machine can also store digital audiobooks on a memory card.

“We want everyone in Moreton Bay Region to have equal opportunities, and Plextalks are an innovative way to enable that,” Cr Sims said.

“By having this technology available at our libraries, we can support people with low vision and dyslexia to access books, magazines and library resources.

“It’s amazing how something so small can make a difference to people’s lives and I’m thrilled that Council has taken this initiative.”

Cr Sims said library staff would support customers with one-on-one training of using the device to make them feel comfortable and confident.

“It’s a fantastic way to open up new possibilities and provide greater independence for people using new technology,” she said.

The Plextalk devices are based at Caboolture, North Lakes and Redcliffe libraries and can be reserved for use from any Branch.
