Scholastic Australia and the Australian Library and Information Association
An invitation to all Australian families, educators and kids to come join us for National Simultaneous Storytime which will be held LIVE on Wednesday 27th May 2020 AT 11.00am EST. This year marks the 20th National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) event, an annual campaign which is free to participate and hosted by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
Every year an Australian picture book, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, children’s hospitals, family homes, bookshops and many more other locations around Australia and New Zealand, where two nations read together as one.
This year however, the National Simultaneous Storytime is heading into the virtual realm as we engage in an online storytime streamed live from The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. Lucinda Gifford author and illustrator of this year’s official storytime book will read Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas as children and families across Australia and New Zealand read together.
Scholastic Australia will be gifting children who are in the major children’s hospitals at this time a free copy of the book. “Its now more important to Scholastic than ever to ensure we can get children in hospital access to the book and this wonderful event. Many families are unable to visit their loved ones in hospital at this time, we hope that they may register and in doing so know that they are reading together where ever they may be” Says Sharon Turner – Corporate Communications Manager Scholastic Australia.
ALIA is delighted to have the Governor General of Australia, David Hurley and his wife take part in this year’s storytime. NSS is also championed by Minister of Education, Dan Tehan, Minister of the Arts, Paul Fletcher and Australian Laureate, Ursula Dubosarky. Scholastic and ALIA are grateful the event is recognised by these prestigious ambassadors, all of whom are available for comment or interview.
The aim is to reach reaching over 1 million kids across Australia and New Zealand reading the same book at the same time, no matter whether they are in the classroom or in the comfort of their own homes. To promote the value of reading with your child, encourage literacy using an Australian children’s book that explores age-appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
Families and educators keen to join in the fun and participate in reaching #1millionkidsreading can register at alia.org.au/nss for FREE and have access to downloadable craft activities that can be enjoyed in the classroom or at home. The book is also available to purchase online.
Last year Scholastic Australia and ALIA worked together to stream the National Simultaneous Storytime event live via Facebook from the State Library of New South Wales in Sydney. Over 1,138,000 readers at over 11,550 locations across Australia and New Zealand read along with Mat Cosgrove as he read his book Alpacas with Maracas!
