Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford will join firefighters at the Queensland Combined Emergency Services Academy (QCESA) today to highlight the importance of home fire safety during winter.

Firefighters will light a room on fire to show how quickly a blaze can take hold and engulf an area.

There is traditionally an increase in house fires during winter, and heating appliances have been responsible for a significant number of these incidents.

The demonstration will coincide with the release of new figures revealing the south-east is at greater risk of house fires during the cooler months.
