Local Heroes grant awarded to not-for-profit in Maleny
Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is excited to announce the winners of the second round of his 2018 ‘Local Heroes’ grants. Four lots of $250 are available for individuals or groups in the electorate, four times a year, and Mr Powell is very pleased with the calibre of this rounds applications.
This rounds winners are the Palmwoods Netball Club, Moofest, young Jaymes Roser from the Maleny Swimming Club and Studio 23.
“Studio 23 is a new startup, not-for-profit service which will provide services and activities for disabled people, and eventually aims to expand into providing support for all young people and leisure activities for everyone!” said Mr Powell.
Studio 23’s catch-cry is to be “a centre for empowering people with diverse abilities to socialize, work, create and learn”, and this grant will assist them to do just that. Mr Powell said that the centre is in the final stages of securing their first physical location to begin offering these services.
Self-identified on their website as a “not-for-profit learning and social hub being developed by a group of students, parents and educators in the Maleny area”, Studio 23 is the brainchild of local mum, Kris Fitzgerald, whose disabled son inspired her to begin the charity.
Ms Fitzgerald has previously stated that “there is no similar facility on the range” and that through her experience as a teacher aide in the local area, she saw too many kids falling through the cracks.
Whilst the studio will initially be purely for disabled youth, Kris has big hopes and plans for expansion into offering courses in art, music, photography, writing and cooking for anyone who is interested.
“Studio 23 will offer these displaced people the chance to work and socialise, and I am proud to be able to support that,” said Mr Powell.
“Kris plans to employ three people full time and work as a volunteer herself. People like Kris are the reason I offer these Local Heroes grants,” Mr Powell concluded.
There are plans for a fundraiser gala event to be held later in the year at the Maleny Community Centre for Studio 23, which will further enable them to secure a location for this essential service, which once operational, will be fully integrated with the NDIS.
