Andrew Powell Comment: Labor’s heartless Grey Nomad tax must go
LNP State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is calling on Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to immediately scrap Labor’s heartless Grey Nomad Tax.
“This is a heartless tax. What makes it worse is that the Premier doesn’t even understand how it works or who she is hurting,” Mr Powell said.
“Annastacia Palaszczuk’s vehicle tax will add thousands of dollars to the cost of a campervan or motorhome under 4.5 tonnes but won’t cost people who buy big motorhomes a cent in extra tax.”
“These aren’t the mega-rich Labor is hurting, these are normal Queenslanders who have worked hard all their lives, paid their taxes and now Annastacia Palaszczuk wants them to pay more.”
“Many of these people have worked hard their whole lives to afford a motorhome or have sold their house to fund the purchase. Labor is taxing people’s dreams.”
“Annastacia Palaszczuk is so out of touch she is still claiming her vehicle tax will only hit ‘luxurious’ motorhomes, but her tax doesn’t affect vehicles over 4.5 tonnes so the top end of town actually escapes scot free in her tax grab. She is lying and misleading the public” said Mr Powell.
“This is yet another one of Labors taxes that has been rammed through without any consultation.”
Mr Powell is concerned that industry groups like the Caravanning Queensland were ignored, as were the thousands of Queenslanders who’ll be slugged when they go to purchase their dream vehicle.
“Many of the motorhomes and campervans that will be taxed are manufactured in Queensland, while the vehicles over 4.5 tonnes that won’t be hit with extra tax are made overseas. Way to support our State” said Mr Powell.
Roger Reilly, the Treasurer from Celebrate Glasshouse Country, has concerns about the impact this new tax will have on Queensland’s tourism industry.
“Queensland, and Glasshouse Country in particular, is an attractive place for RV enthusiasts to come and visit. Taxing the hilt out of their mode of transport could really affect whether or not they come to our State” said Mr Reilly.
“This is an ill-conceived tax that will hurt grey nomads and Queensland jobs” said Mr Powell.
“Premier, these people don’t deserve to be fleeced to fill the funding gaps in your sick budget.”
“Whether it’s record high power bills, spiraling petrol prices or the waste tax – Queenslanders are struggling under Labor’s budget of debt, taxes and unemployment” said Mr Powell.
“I am calling on the Premier today to scrap this tax on motorhomes and campervans – a simple stroke of a pen to close this silly loophole.”
