Woodford Combined Emergency Services Expo

A lifesaving helicopter, the latest emergency vehicles and the famous jaws of life will all descend on Woodford this Sunday, May 27 for the 2018 Combined Emergency Services Expo.

Queensland’s lead emergency agencies will converge on the Woodford Showgrounds from 11am, in a push to encourage disaster preparedness ahead of the upcoming bushfire and storm seasons.

Local Disaster Management Group Chair Councillor Peter Flannery said the free event would be a great day out for local families with the showgrounds to be packed with demonstrations from Queensland’s top emergency services as well as displays, food stalls, and free jumping castles, face painting and balloon twisting.

“The Combined Emergency Services Expo is about getting you and your family ready and gaining valuable advice from council, QFES, SES, police, ambulance and support services about what to do during a disaster event,” Cr Flannery said.

Division 12 Councillor Adrian Raedel said as part of the expo, families could go into the draw to win a major prize valued at $400.

“To go into the draw, simply collect a ‘Ready Ranger’ passport from council’s expo stall, get it stamped from each of the emergency services stands and return to council’s stall where your entry will go directly into the barrel,” Cr Raedel said.

“This is an event for the whole family, and I know young ones will have heaps of fun watching the rescue helicopter fly high above the showgrounds and seeing the lights and sirens of fire trucks, police cars and ambulances.”

Note: the lifesaving helicopter and other emergency vehicles are subject to favourable weather conditions and operational needs on the day.

SES Local Controller Henk van den Ende encouraged all families to attend and learn about what to do during a bushfire or storm.

“By showing you what can happen in the worst case scenario and demonstrating how you can prepare for a storm or bushfire, we’re hoping that we won’t ever have to deploy technologies like the jaws of life or perform a swift water rescue when a disaster hits,” Mr van den Ende said.

The 2018 Woodford Combined Emergency Services Expo will include a live broadcast from 101.5FM and is supported by the Woodford Show Society.

The expo will run from 11am to 2pm on Sunday, May 27 at the Woodford Showgrounds, 34 Neurum Road, Woodford.
