Police nab 35 drug drivers in 10-day operation
Traffic police focusing on drug drivers have picked up 35 people for the offence in a 10-day operation.
Landsborough Road Police Unit officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Mal Lilley said officers did testing in the Caboolture, Bribie Island, Kilcoy, Woodford, Deception Bay and Burpengary areas between January 7 and Sunday.
He said 20 of those caught were in the Caboolture and Bribie Island areas.
Two drivers had their licences immediately suspended after they were caught drug driving for the second time in a month.
Of particular concern to Snr Sgt Lilley was the fact that more than one in every three drivers tested for illicit drugs returned a positive result.
"In some respects it doesn't surprise me, it just disappoints me," Snr Sgt Lilley said.
"To still be getting these results does indicate a problem in the wider community for drug use."
He said drivers who took to the roads after consuming illicit drugs significantly increased their risk of being involved in a serious crash.
"We will be testing more and more people and hopefully the message will get through."
