$100,000 in subsidies open for Seniors Week

Community organisations and local councils can apply for Palaszczuk Government subsidies of up to $1000 to run activities and events across the state during Seniors Week 2016, to be held from 13-21 August.

At a local senior’s afternoon tea in Gladstone for Community Cabinet, Seniors Minister Coralee O’Rourke encouraged organisations to apply for their share of the $100,000 funding from 1 February 2016.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to establishing an age-friendly Queensland, where people of all ages can take part in local activities and enjoy quality of life, which is exactly what Seniors Week is all about,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“These grants are a great way to help fund local events, so that Queensland organisations can show their appreciation for seniors, while encouraging them to take part in community activities.

“Seniors enrich our communities with their wide range of knowledge and experience, and Seniors Week is the perfect opportunity to show them our appreciation.

“I look forward to a bigger and better Seniors Week this year, with hundreds of events expected to be held across the state.”

Council on the Ageing Queensland (COTAQ) Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans welcomed the Queensland Government’s $100,000 to subsidise events and activities during the week.

“We encourage Queenslanders across the state to support their local community organisations to plan and host a Seniors Week event this year,” he said.

“Thanks to the tremendous efforts of many groups and countless volunteers, Seniors Week is now a major event.

“For some living in rural and remote areas, Seniors Week is the one time of year they get to catch up with current and long-lost friends.

“For others Seniors Week is a way to assist in combating social isolation through the discovery of programs and activities, creating new friendships and remaining an active member of society.”

Seniors Week will run in Queensland from 13 - 21 August 2016 with the theme of It's on for young & old. Applications for subsidies close 31 March 2016.
