SUMMARY:Neighbourhood Watch Week October 3-9
DESCRIPTION:Neighbourhood Watch Australasia launched its first ever national awareness week yesterday in a bid to boost community awareness and involvement in the program. \nThe inaugural Neighbourhood Watch Week will run from October 3–9\, seeing local Neighbourhood Watch Groups across Queensland host over 80 activities\, including stalls at local supermarkets\, hardware outlets\, markets\, other events\, as well as morning and afternoon teas along with open information sessions. \nInspector Les Bulluss\, Manager of Community Programs and Engagement\, Queensland Police Service\, said Neighbourhood Watch helps bring local communities and police together to address local issues and help create community solutions. \n“By getting involved in this week’s events and activities\, you can help make your Neighbourhood Watch work for you.” \nThe Queensland Police Service has supported Neighbourhood Watch Queensland since its introduction in 1988 as a community based program designed to reduce localised crime and the fear of crime. Inspector Bulluss said the program has a range of additional benefits to police when run effectively in local communities. \n“Participation in Neighbourhood Watch helps people feel more connected within their community\, and helps people improve their personal safety and home security\,” Inspector Bullus said. \n“Importantly for police\, when Neighbourhood Watch is running effectively in a local community\, we’re more likely to receive reports of criminal or suspicious activity and the quality of the information we receive improves.” \nNeighbourhood Watch Week is designed to boost Neighbourhood Watch Queensland membership and encourage positive engagement between police and the community. \nThe Queensland community are encouraged to get involved during Neighbourhood Watch Week. Community members wanting to find out more regarding Neighbourhood Watch and their local events\, should visit the Neighbourhood Watch Queensland website at www.nhwq.org or the Neighbourhood Watch Australasia website at www. nhwa.com.au. \nThe Caboolture Neighbourhood Watch Site is also available and can be viewed any time concerning local events and news \n

SUMMARY:National State Emergency Service (SES) Week (15 – 23 October)
DESCRIPTION:With more than 6\,000 active SES volunteers across Queensland\, most of us have come into contact with the men and women in orange at some stage.\n  \n\nThere’s half a million reasons to say thank you this SES Week.\n  \n\nLast financial year\, SES volunteers from around the state gave more than 500\,000 hours of their time freely to help the people of Queensland.\n  \n\nThis figure is remarkable and an example of the enormous contribution SES volunteers make to their communities.\n  \n\nAs Deputy Commissioner\, I know I speak on behalf of all Queenslanders when I say a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to each and every SES volunteer for their outstanding hard work and dedication.\n  \n\nSES volunteers sacrifice time with their families and at work to help the community in times of crisis\, and they spend countless hours training and building their capability.\n  \n\nI also feel it is important to make a special mention of those people who are behind our volunteers.\n  \n\nThe husbands\, wives\, partners\, friends\, families and employers are the strongest supporters of our volunteers and without their continued support\, our volunteers would find it hard to provide the quality service they are known for.\n  \n\nI would like to extend an invitation to all Queenslanders to take time this week to thank their local SES volunteers\, either in person or by joining the conversation on Twitter and on the QFES Facebook page.\n \n\n\nKind regards\,\n  \n\n\nMike Wassing\n  \nDeputy Commissioner Emergency Services Volunteers\nQueensland Fire and Emergency Services\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Hann Family Fundraiser Saturday 22nd October at Morayfield East State School
DESCRIPTION:A fundraiser on Saturday 22nd October at Morayfield East State School. A community event whereby local businesses\, friends and family are involved in trying to raise money for this beautiful family. \nA reminder of the story of the Hann family: \nChristine Hann is a 31 year old mother of 3 children aged 8\, 6 and 17 months old. In April this year\, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer\, it was a huge shock to us all. Then after 4 months of harsh chemotherapy she started to develop excruciating headaches…after days of pain\, ICU and lots of tests\, on the 2nd of September she and her family were told that the cancer has spread to her brain and that she only has a matter of weeks left. \nChristine and Shaun moved up to Mt Isa from Morayfield in 2013\, but with family and friends still down here\, continued to visit often. Since the cancer Christine and her family have relocated back here for treatment etc. \nThere has been a gofundme page set up and a variety of fundraisers to help her and her family make important ‘bucket list’ memories and to try and create something substantial to support the family afterwards. \nOne of the features of our event is that Voice grand finalist Tash Lockhart has kindly offered to come and perform at the event.

SUMMARY:Beloved pup remembered to raise funds for cancer Brennan Park Bribie Island Saturday 29 October
DESCRIPTION:South East Queenslanders are being invited to gather to help raise awareness and funds for research into cancer in animals on a day inspired by the death of a much-loved dog. \nDuke was a Labrador Maremma Sheepdog cross\, who sadly passed away from an aggressive form of cancer called Histiocytic Sarcoma (HS)\, which is found in both animals and humans. \nHis parents\, Brooke and Clinton\, have decided to organise a fundraising event to support the not-for-profit research charity Australian Animal Cancer Foundation (AACF). \nDay for Duke will be held in Brennan Park on Bribie Island on Saturday 29 October from 10am to 4pm. There will be a range of activities for families and their pups\, including a dog washing and grooming parlour\, doggie boutiques and accessories\, obedience and agility school\, pet photography plus a jumping castle\, face painting\, raffles and much more.  Many local businesses have been eager to throw their support behind the event\, with Triple M’s Jamie Dunn and Agro attending. \nDr Rod Straw\, founder of the AACF\, says it is important to bring much needed attention to the prevalence of cancer in small animals.  “We treat hundreds of animals with cancer each year and with the help of The Foundation\, we can learn how to better manage and even cure cancer in pets\, which translates directly to benefit people\,” Dr Straw said. \nDuke had his leg amputated and underwent surgery and chemotherapy to remove his cancer. Unfortunately\, the cancer was too aggressive and soon returned as a mass in his abdomen. \nDuke’s mum\, Brooke\, says she wants other dog owners to know what warning signs to look for and be vigilant in recognising them\, after Duke was initially misdiagnosed from an occurring limp. \n“It doesn’t matter what age or breed your dog is\, cancer doesn’t discriminate. It can also metastasize at a much faster rate in dogs than humans\,” Brooke said.  In humans\, cancer kills 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men. The incidence is almost equal in dogs\, killing 50% of dogs over the age of 10 and 33% of those under. \nDuke’s parents intend for the event to become an annual occurrence\, providing long term support to the AACF and cancer research in animals and humans alike. \nMore information on the Australian Animal Cancer Foundation can be found at www.animalcancer.com.au.
