DESCRIPTION:The Motor Neurone Disease Association of Queensland Inc. (MND Queensland) North Brisbane & Caboolture Support Group is hosting the very first Walk to D-Feet MND Redcliffe on Sunday 14 October at Suttons Beach Park. \nRaising awareness on Motor Neurone Disease (MND) as well as raising vital funds are the two main aims of the event. We are hoping for at least 100 participants to join the walk\, to help us raise $10\,000. Many walk participants get involved to support a loved one who is suffering from MND\, or pay tribute to someone who has passed from this fatal neurological disease. \nThere are over 2\,000 Australians living with MND\, and around two more are diagnosed with MND every day\, and sadly\, two people die daily from MND. There is no known cause\, and no cure. Organisations like MND Queensland provide vital services and support to help people living with MND. \nMND Queensland Fundraising and Communications Manager\, Jason Russo said “We are really excited that the Brisbane North & Caboolture MND Support Group are bringing this event to Redcliffe. We’re looking forward to a lovely day by the breezy bay at Suttons Beach.” \n“With only 7% of our work being funded by the government\, events like the Walk to D-Feet MND are really important fundraisers for MND Queensland. We rely on community fundraising efforts so that we can provide Queenslanders affected by MND with support\, advice and equipment – such as wheelchairs and communication devices – and also fund research into  finding the cause\, and a cure for MND.” \nMND Queensland is commemorating 35 years of support and services in 2018 and the Brisbane North and Caboolture MND Support Group celebrates 25 years of providing support services and fundraising in the region this year. \nEvery registered walk participant receives a free t-shirt and there will be awards for highest fundraisers\, top dog and more. You will see womens and junior state representative teams take to the track in a bid to bring glory to their home state. \nThe three days of competition will feature skaters from more than 25 different leagues across Australia. Athletes who have undergone grueling selection and weeks of state team training and are ready to battle it out for the title of National Champion. \nMeet Lachlan ‘Yeah Nah’ Buke fresh from representing Australia in the USA at the world junior roller derby championships and representing junior Team Queensland at The Nationals. Ranking 4th in the world Lachlan says “To represent my country was a great honor\, I’m immensely proud to have been a part of the 2018 junior roller derby world cup in America. To be a part of a team that came together from all over Australia was an experience I will never forget and will be forever grateful to be a part of this sport that has allowed me to achieve this accomplishment at only 16 Years old.” At the Roller Derby Nationals you can watch Lachlan and other Australian representative junior skaters take to the track. \nIn its 1st year at Morayfeild we hope to see the Australian National Roller Derby Championships build a solid home in Morayfield. Bringing players & athletes from all around Australia each year to compete at this 3 day high speed\, full contact\, championship event. \nEvent organizer Rosie Richards says: ‘We are so excited to be hosting such a high caliber Roller Derby tournament with so much Australian talent. Previous tournaments this size have been in Adelaide or Canberra so this is a real win for the Morayfeild .’\nMorayfield will benefit from a $539\,000 economic boost when the 2018 Roller Derby National Championships comes to town next month. \nMoreton Bay Regional Council’s Spokesperson for Parks\, Recreation and Sport\, Councillor Koliana Winchester said more than 300 competitors and officials will  head to the region from across the nation for the roller derby championships. \n“We are thrilled to welcome Derby Fest for the 2018 Roller Derby National Championships and I am sure the event\, which is expected to attract more than 400 spectators\, will get hearts racing with every twist\, turn and jam in this fast-paced sport\,” she said.   \n“Amid all the action\, major sporting events such as this championships open many economic opportunities in our region supporting local businesses\, sporting clubs and hotels along the way. \n“Moreton Bay is one of Australia’s fastest growing urban areas and we pride ourselves on our strong sporting culture and active lifestyle so this event is a perfect for our region.” \nDivision 12 Councillor Adrian Raedel said the Morayfield Sports and Events Centre (MSEC) was the perfect place to host the roller derby championships. \n“MSEC is a stand out multipurpose facility boasting  three courts that can cater for a wide variety of activities and sports such as roller derby and the recently held the Judo championships\,” he said. \n“I am pleased to say that just  two months ago we commenced construction on the major $7.8 million upgrade of MSEC. \n“The sod turn marked the first major milestone in this project\, which will see will see two new multipurpose courts constructed together with a new events space for conferences and trade shows\, adding to the three popular multi-purpose courts. \n“The upgrade will also see new retractable seating for more than 1\,000 spectators plus new changerooms\, amenities and a commercial-grade kitchen.  \n“I am excited about this project as we look forward to hosting more great sporting events at this great facility for years to come. \n“While in Moreton Bay be sure to make the most of the weekend and enjoy all that our region has to offer in your spare time. \n“Why not check out stunning D’Aguilar National Park\, beautiful Bribie Island beaches and Pumicestone Passage or fly a kite at Pelican Park in Clontarf\, there is just so much to see in the beautiful Moreton Bay Region.” \n  \nThe event will be opens to the public from 9-6pm Saturday to Sunday.
