SUMMARY:National Child Protection Week runs from 4 – 10 September
DESCRIPTION:National Child Protection Week runs from 4 – 10 September.  In this week we take the time to reflect on child protection issues and promote the wellbeing of our young people. \nReports of child abuse are overwhelming and give witness to the lack of accountability for adults who abuse young people. Sadly\, some communities are looking the other way\, ignoring the abuse of children because this is the easiest option. People don’t want to get involved in notifying assaults on our young people because of the fear of the consequences from the perpetrators. We have lost the ability for adults to serve as collective parents for all the young people in our neighbourhood. \nNothing is more important than protecting our vulnerable children from abuse and neglect. Child abuse goes beyond the tears and pain experienced in childhood. Victims endure a lifetime of psychological and emotional distress\, they often turn to drugs to kill the pain of abuse\, attempt suicide\, self-mutilate and have major trust issues. We\, as a society\, must ensure that we provide our children with a safe and supportive environment\, so that they have the opportunity to reach their full potential. \nThe first step is for us\, as adults\, to report the abuse of our young people. Every adult must be responsible for every child\, whether you are their friend\, family member\, the local shop keeper\, doctor or anyone else that is part of a child’s life. Organisations that work with young people need to report abuse complaints. There should be no exception to mandatory reporting. \nWe need to listen to what is happening to our young people\, speak up and get help when our children are in trouble. \nMore needs to be done to create a safe and comfortable environment for one of Australia’s most at risk demographics.  It is imperative that we work towards creating a better future for our kids. \nYours Faithfully\, \nFather Chris Riley\nCEO and Founder at Youth Off The Streets \nQueensland Child Protection Website \nIt should be noted that a $2 million campaign\, has been announced by the government to tackle the issue\, the first day of National Child Protection Week\, is similar to those used to change the “none of my business” culture surrounding domestic violence. \nThe issue of child protection has been in the spotlight since the death of Caboolture toddler Mason Jet Lee in June. \nThe Department of Child Safety responded to 22\,000 child safety notifications in the 12 months to March 31. \nOf those reports\, more than 4000 were made by a police officer\, 3900 by a health worker and nearly 2000 by a non-government organisation. \nJust over 1000 notifications were made by a friend or neighbour and 159 by the children themselves. \n Support Services\n1800 Respect http://www.1800respect.org.au/ \nNational counselling helpline\nTelephone: 1800 737 732 \nAdults Surviving Child Abuse http://www.asca.org.au/ \nCounselling and support for adult survivors of child abuse\nTelephone: 1300 657 380 \nBravehearts  http://www.bravehearts.org.au/ \nCounselling and support for survivors of child sexual abuse\nTelephone: 1800 272 831 \nChild Wise  http://www.childwise.net/ \nCounselling provider\nTelephone: 1800 991 099 \nLifeline http://www.lifeline.org.au/ \n24-hour crisis support and suicide prevention\nTelephone: 13 11 14 \nCare Leavers Australia Network  http://www.clan.org.au/ \n1800 008 774 \nHeadspace http://headspace.org.au/ \nCaboolture Telephone: 54281599 \nNational Toll Free 1800650890

SUMMARY:Queensland Road Safety Week 22-28 August
DESCRIPTION:Queensland Road Safety Week will run this year between 22-28 August and is an opportunity for all Queenslanders to get involved in making our roads safer. \n‘Speaking up for road safety’ is the focus and we’re encouraging the whole community to have their say on road safety. \nCommunities\, schools and workplaces are encouraged to support the week by hosting local events or sharing road safety information among staff\, students\, colleagues\, family and friends. \nWhy not host a morning tea at work or have a free dress day at school? Perhaps invite the local Adopt-a-Cop to speak to students\, or host a road safety quiz in your office. \nYou can share a personal story\, suggest a road safety tip\, talk to your kids\, family and friends about staying safe\, or make a pledge to improve a single road behaviour. \nQueensland Road Safety Week is also about encouraging the community to challenge the status quo. Let’s stop accepting death and serious injury as just part and parcel of using our roads. \nSpeak up. Be heard. Make Queensland’s 2016 Road Safety Week an important event in your community’s calendar. \nRegister your event \nWhy not register your own Road Safety Week event and share the way you are making a difference in your local community? Be it your workplace\, school\, household\, street or town\, let us know what you are planning to do to celebrate Road Safety Week. \nTo register your event add it to the activities calendar. \nDownload the Road Safety Week toolkit \nOnce your event is registered\, or if you need materials for your workplace or school\, download the Road Safety Week toolkit for posters\, screen savers\, email signatures\, decorations and factsheets. \nQueensland Road Safety Week is a Queensland Government initiative\, delivered in partnership by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Queensland Police Service. The RACQ\, the Motor Accident Insurance Commission\, and the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q) and Moreton Bays Home Of Classic Hits 101.5 FM are proud supporters of the event.

SUMMARY:Queensland Senior's Week August 13-21 Let's come together Queensland!
DESCRIPTION:Queenslanders of all ages will unite August 13-21\, 2016 to celebrate the many contributions older have made in their communities.  This year’s Seniors Week continues the theme  It’s on for young & old to further develop intergenerational connections within your community. \n‘Seniors Week is a time for all Queenslanders to acknowledge and celebrate the valuable contributions seniors make in their communities.  Whether as volunteers or in the workforce\, seniors utilize their experiences and knowledge as carers\, grandparents and community leaders. ‘ COTA Queensland  Mark Tucker-Evans  said. \n“For some living in rural and remote communities\, Seniors Week is the one time of year they get to connect with long lost friends. \n“For others\, Seniors Week is a way to assist in combating social isolation through the discovery of programs and activities\, creation of new friendships and in remaining an active member of society. ” \n“We appreciate that Seniors Week can only be a success through the hard work and efforts of people and organisations throughout the state. We are looking forward to working with everyone”   said Mark. \nThe ask: \nGet involved by joining us in challenging the stereotypes of ageing. \nSeniors Week provides the opportunity to highlight the diversity of older Queenslanders.  This year we invite you to participate in our Face of Ageing campaign. \nWe have all heard the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words“.  Your face tells the story of your life. \nWhether the lines on your face are the result of “I laughed a lot” or “I thought deeply” let your story shine through! \nIt’s easy to be part of the Face of Ageing. Simply take a selfie or an elfie (elder selfie) and upload it onto social media or to the Queensland Seniors Week Facebook page with the hashtag #faceofageing and share with us a bit about yourself.  Join us in challenging the ageing stereotype. \nThis is perfect opportunity to connect generations by getting the whole community involved. \nShow your support on social media by downloading cover and profile images for Facebook and Twitter from our Seniors Week resource section at www.cotaqld.org.au and using the hashtag  #qldseniorsweek when posting about Queensland Seniors Week. \nAre you looking to get involved with events in your community? Visit the online events calendar to see what’s on in your area.  Events are being added weekly and I invite you to visit often. \nKey Facts and Figures \n\nCOTA Queensland coordinated the first Seniors Week in Queensland the 1960s – back then it was called Old People’s Week … how times have changed\n1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 65 in Australia live alone\nSeniors Week is a way to assist in combating social isolation\nSeniors Week brings Queenslanders of all ages together\nIt’s the largest week long seniors’ celebration in Queensland\nThere are some really fun events including music and dancing\, trivia competitions\, art and road shows \, story telling\, art exhibitions and even a mock Olympics\nYou don’t have to be old to attend\nYou don’t have to be young to have fun\nIt’s on for young & old
