SUMMARY:National Stroke Week September 12 - 18
DESCRIPTION:The Stroke Foundation is urging local residents to think FAST and learn the signs of stroke this National Stroke Week.\nStroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan said this year Stroke Week (September 12–18) was about educating the community that speed saves when it comes to stroke. \n“There will be more than 50\,000 strokes in Australia this year and sadly many people miss out on accessing life-saving treatment as they don’t get to hospital on time\,” Ms McGowan said. \n“We want the community to be aware that stroke is always a medical emergency. When you have a stroke\, your brain cells start to die at a rate of almost two million per minute. \n“Being aware of the signs of stroke and knowing to call 000 as soon as it strikes is crucial in the fight against this terrible disease. \n“We need all Australians to get involved by helping us spread this important message this Stroke Week\,” she said. \nThis year more than 2500 Stroke Week activities are expected to be held across the country. Activities range from awareness morning teas\, displays and talks\, and health checks. \nThroughout the week\, all Australians are encouraged to: \nOrganise an awareness activity\n fundraise for the Stroke Foundation\n Host a health check \nNational Stroke Week participants can choose an activity that best suits them and the Stroke Foundation will provide a free resource pack to assist everyone who registers an event. \nMs McGowan said National Stroke Week activities\, whether community-wide or personal would have a real impact on improving the state of stroke. \n“With the community’s support we want to send a vital message to all Australians this Stroke Week: act FAST if you think you or a loved one is having a stroke\,’’ Ms McGowan said. \n“Too many Australians are unaware that a speedy reaction to stroke could mean the difference between life and death. \n“Stroke doesn’t have to be a death sentence\, it is treatable but people need to know the signs of stroke and get to hospital fast. \n“This Stroke Week we are encouraging community members to get involved and help us spread this life-saving message. \n“It is all about bringing people together to have fun\, while raising awareness of stroke.” \nThink FAST this National Stroke Week and raise awareness of stroke. Find out more\, register your event at www.strokefoundation.com.au. Free resource packs and information are available to assist with events; including posters fundraising ideas and information about stroke awareness. \nNational Stroke Week runs from September 12 to 18. It is an annual event which aims to raise the awareness of stroke within the community and encourage Australians to take action to prevent stroke.

SUMMARY:National Child Protection Week runs from 4 – 10 September
DESCRIPTION:National Child Protection Week runs from 4 – 10 September.  In this week we take the time to reflect on child protection issues and promote the wellbeing of our young people. \nReports of child abuse are overwhelming and give witness to the lack of accountability for adults who abuse young people. Sadly\, some communities are looking the other way\, ignoring the abuse of children because this is the easiest option. People don’t want to get involved in notifying assaults on our young people because of the fear of the consequences from the perpetrators. We have lost the ability for adults to serve as collective parents for all the young people in our neighbourhood. \nNothing is more important than protecting our vulnerable children from abuse and neglect. Child abuse goes beyond the tears and pain experienced in childhood. Victims endure a lifetime of psychological and emotional distress\, they often turn to drugs to kill the pain of abuse\, attempt suicide\, self-mutilate and have major trust issues. We\, as a society\, must ensure that we provide our children with a safe and supportive environment\, so that they have the opportunity to reach their full potential. \nThe first step is for us\, as adults\, to report the abuse of our young people. Every adult must be responsible for every child\, whether you are their friend\, family member\, the local shop keeper\, doctor or anyone else that is part of a child’s life. Organisations that work with young people need to report abuse complaints. There should be no exception to mandatory reporting. \nWe need to listen to what is happening to our young people\, speak up and get help when our children are in trouble. \nMore needs to be done to create a safe and comfortable environment for one of Australia’s most at risk demographics.  It is imperative that we work towards creating a better future for our kids. \nYours Faithfully\, \nFather Chris Riley\nCEO and Founder at Youth Off The Streets \nQueensland Child Protection Website \nIt should be noted that a $2 million campaign\, has been announced by the government to tackle the issue\, the first day of National Child Protection Week\, is similar to those used to change the “none of my business” culture surrounding domestic violence. \nThe issue of child protection has been in the spotlight since the death of Caboolture toddler Mason Jet Lee in June. \nThe Department of Child Safety responded to 22\,000 child safety notifications in the 12 months to March 31. \nOf those reports\, more than 4000 were made by a police officer\, 3900 by a health worker and nearly 2000 by a non-government organisation. \nJust over 1000 notifications were made by a friend or neighbour and 159 by the children themselves. \n Support Services\n1800 Respect http://www.1800respect.org.au/ \nNational counselling helpline\nTelephone: 1800 737 732 \nAdults Surviving Child Abuse http://www.asca.org.au/ \nCounselling and support for adult survivors of child abuse\nTelephone: 1300 657 380 \nBravehearts  http://www.bravehearts.org.au/ \nCounselling and support for survivors of child sexual abuse\nTelephone: 1800 272 831 \nChild Wise  http://www.childwise.net/ \nCounselling provider\nTelephone: 1800 991 099 \nLifeline http://www.lifeline.org.au/ \n24-hour crisis support and suicide prevention\nTelephone: 13 11 14 \nCare Leavers Australia Network  http://www.clan.org.au/ \n1800 008 774 \nHeadspace http://headspace.org.au/ \nCaboolture Telephone: 54281599 \nNational Toll Free 1800650890

SUMMARY:Queensland Road Safety Week 22-28 August
DESCRIPTION:Queensland Road Safety Week will run this year between 22-28 August and is an opportunity for all Queenslanders to get involved in making our roads safer. \n‘Speaking up for road safety’ is the focus and we’re encouraging the whole community to have their say on road safety. \nCommunities\, schools and workplaces are encouraged to support the week by hosting local events or sharing road safety information among staff\, students\, colleagues\, family and friends. \nWhy not host a morning tea at work or have a free dress day at school? Perhaps invite the local Adopt-a-Cop to speak to students\, or host a road safety quiz in your office. \nYou can share a personal story\, suggest a road safety tip\, talk to your kids\, family and friends about staying safe\, or make a pledge to improve a single road behaviour. \nQueensland Road Safety Week is also about encouraging the community to challenge the status quo. Let’s stop accepting death and serious injury as just part and parcel of using our roads. \nSpeak up. Be heard. Make Queensland’s 2016 Road Safety Week an important event in your community’s calendar. \nRegister your event \nWhy not register your own Road Safety Week event and share the way you are making a difference in your local community? Be it your workplace\, school\, household\, street or town\, let us know what you are planning to do to celebrate Road Safety Week. \nTo register your event add it to the activities calendar. \nDownload the Road Safety Week toolkit \nOnce your event is registered\, or if you need materials for your workplace or school\, download the Road Safety Week toolkit for posters\, screen savers\, email signatures\, decorations and factsheets. \nQueensland Road Safety Week is a Queensland Government initiative\, delivered in partnership by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Queensland Police Service. The RACQ\, the Motor Accident Insurance Commission\, and the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q) and Moreton Bays Home Of Classic Hits 101.5 FM are proud supporters of the event.
