SUMMARY:Scarborough Originals mark 2 new date Sunday May 7th
DESCRIPTION:The First Scarborough Originals were deemed a great success.  After the onslaught of Cyclone Debbie throughout the week\, the first event was welcomed with clear blue skies and happy music goers at Jamieson Park.\nThe event was well received within the community with well over 400 attending.  Redcliffe Rotary Sunrise ran the sausage sizzle\, a live artist painted side of stage and The ECO ran the live music.   Volunteers rallied to set up\, fundraise and pack down; it was a real community minded event. \nAll ages and walks of life attended with the event proving to be very family friendly allowing parents a more relaxed atmosphere to watch live music and have their children play.  The four bands all brought to the event a style\, groove and originality that was well received with attentive audiences.  It didn’t take long for the dancing to begin and for the groove to take over. \nThose attending were treated to folk\, pop\, blues\, rock\, dub and reggae genres with all bands performing and interacting with the crowds.  All artists were paid and the event was funded through the community and donations.  Mon Komo Hotel came on board as a major sponsor supporting the event and the local community attending dug deep purchasing raffle tickets that assisted in funding the first Originals. The community spirit\, mind and energy was overwhelming. Organisers could not have been more impressed with the generosity of the attendees. \n“It’s so important to bring together the community and under the banner of supporting the local arts scene is such a great way to create a community mind…  Donations are essential to this event\, it is a crowd funded event\, we were impressed with the appreciation and the generosity.  We believe that as long as the community keeps supporting The Originals in Scarborough we can see the event having a long lifespan in supporting the creative scene.”  Kim Ferguson\, Event Co-ordinator.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCheck Out The Scarborough Originals Online

SUMMARY:Heart Week 30 April - 7 May check your blood pressure
DESCRIPTION:City slickers are more likely to let high blood pressure become a “silent killer” than their country counterparts\, with new research showing that millions of Australians are at risk of sudden death from a stroke or heart attack. \nThe Heart Foundation has found a city-country divide in data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics\, with a quarter of Australian adults – or four million people – having high blood pressure that is either untreated or treated inadequately. \nResearchers discovered that while people in the country are more likely to have high blood pressure than those in the city – 39 per cent compared to 31 per cent – they were also more likely to treat the condition (63 per cent to 48 per cent). \nIf residents in regional and rural Australia had the same rate of hypertension as those in our cities\, close to 570\,000 fewer people would have hypertension in these areas\, the analysis found. \nHeart Foundation chief medical adviser Garry Jennings said research had long shown lower indices of health in regional and rural Australia with higher rates of high blood pressure and obesity\, but he was surprised by the difference in treatment. \n“There are fewer people in the city with high blood pressure\, but a great proportion didn’t have it under control\,” Professor Jennings said. \nHe considered a closer relationship between the local GP and patient in regional and rural clinics as a potential explanation\, despite less access to health services than metropolitan areas. \nGarry Jennings. Photo: The Heart Foundation\n“This could tell us something about the health system\,” he said. “I wonder if people in the city are less engaged with the health system for more reason.” \nClose to six million – more than a third of Australian adults – have hypertension. \nAmong those who are taking medication for hypertension\, one in four or 1.4 million\, still have high blood pressure. \nThe condition is the biggest risk factor for Australia’s greatest killers – heart attack and stroke – but is also the cause of other serious illnesses like dementia and kidney disease. \nProfessor Jennings said the ABS data also revealed the most “at risk groups” across Australia\, including men between the age of 55 and 65 and older women. \nThe prevalence of hypertension is higher for Australian men – 35 per cent or three million adults – compared to 32 per cent or 2.9 million women. \nHe said the stats had “flat-lined” in Australia in the past 20 years despite more information about reducing the risks of heart disease such as a healthy diet and exercise. \n“In those groups where we’ve seen falls for decades\, we’re seeing increases again\,” Professor Jennings said. “Men don’t go to the doctors for check ups unless they’re forced along by their partners\,” he added. \nThe Heart Foundation is raising awareness about high blood pressure during Heart Week\, which runs from April 30 to May 7.

SUMMARY:Inexcess show pays tribute to one of Australia’s biggest pop/rock bands at Caboolture Sports Club Saturday 25th March
DESCRIPTION:A MUST-see for all INXS fans\, tribute band Inexcess will pay homage to one of Australia’s most influential rock/pop bands of all time with a free show at Caboolture Sports Club on Saturday 25th March. \nPerforming all their greatest hits including Never Tear us Apart\, New Sensation\, Original Sin and many more\, the Inexcess tribute show will take the audience on a journey back to the Michael Hutchence era of alternative rock music\, ripped jeans and concert tees. \nNothing is spared in terms of the scale and energy of the show. The show is performed 100% live\, with a six piece-backing band that features some of Australia’s very best musicians\, delivering the big show atmosphere that INXS was known for. \nCSC Group Marketing Manager Matt Rafton said the show was uncannily close to the real thing\, with mix of fantastic songs and a professional band brining the show to life. \n“It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 20 years since the sudden passing of Michael Hutchence in 1997\,” Mr Rafton said. \n“Yet the footprint of his music has not faded\, with many of their hits still well known and loved today. \n“We are so excited to have the Inexcess tribute show performing here at the Club\, they are always a real crowd pleaser.” \nInexcess will perform live at Caboolture Sports Club Saturday 25th March from 8.30pm. \nFor more information visit www.cabsports.com.au or call 5497 9711

SUMMARY:Moreton Bay residents invited to get marching to help end melanoma
DESCRIPTION:Melanoma March kicks off on Bribie Island on Saturday 18 March\, and Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) is urging locals to sign up. \n  \nOne Australian dies from melanoma every six hours\, despite the fact that 90% of melanomas can be successfully treated if detected early. Melanoma is the most common cancer affecting 15-39 year-old Australians and the leading cause of cancer death in 20-39 year-olds. \n  \nAnnual Melanoma March events are held around the country throughout March and early April to raise awareness and fundraising to support life-changing melanoma research. Participants in Bribie Island can walk or march along a short course and can also track their progress online using a new Fitbit integration on their fundraising page. \n  \nMelanoma March supports vital melanoma research and is a chance for Australians to remember those lost to melanoma\, support Australia’s dedicated melanoma researchers and inspire all Australians to help end melanoma. \n  \nBribie Island local Megghan Holland was diagnosed with conjunctive melanoma in 2001 when she was just 13 years old\, after noticing a red lump on the corner of her right eye. The six years that followed saw Megghan undergo an eye resection and neck dissection.\nMegghan\, who recently gave birth to her first child\, has now been cancer free for nine years. She is now working as a registered nurse and deals with skin cancer diagnosis and treatment.\n“My melanoma battle inspired me to do my nursing degree so I can help others and play at least a small part in tackling melanoma\,” Megghan said. “I have remained in great health which I’m thankful for every day\, and I still try to exercise\, eat well and of course stay sun safe. I’m really committed to doing what I can to help end melanoma\, and I’d love people to join me at the Bribie Island Melanoma March.” \n  \nFor those who can’t make it to a march\, MIA is encouraging Australians to set their own personal challenge or activity to get moving any way they like as part of Move for Melanoma. \n  \nHelp change the future of thousands of Australians diagnosed with melanoma and register by heading to participate at melanomamarch.org.au or join the Melanoma March community on Facebook @MelanomaMarch. \n  \nMelanoma March will be held in Bribie Island on Saturday 18 March at Foreshore Crest Park\, Marine Parade\, Bellara from 7am.
