SUMMARY:Queensland Day Tuesday 6 June 2017
DESCRIPTION:Queensland Day is a celebration of the state’s birthday and its official separation from New South Wales on 6 June\, 1859. \nA proclamation was read by George Bowen on 10 December 1859 whereupon Queensland was formally separated from New South Wales.  \nQueensland became the Colony of Queensland and the colony was named for Her Majesty Queen Victoria. \n Queensland was the only Australian colony that commenced immediately with its own parliament\, instead of first spending time as a Crown Colony (i.e. having a Governor appointed by The Crown). \nThe Colony of Queensland existed as a colony of the British Empire from 1859 to 1901. \nFollowing 1 January 1901 the Colony of Queensland ceased to exist and became the State Of Queensland under Dominion of Australia and later as the Commonwealth of Australia. \nWhile as the Colony of Queensland at its greatest extent\,  included the present day State of Queensland\, the Territory of Papua and the Coral Sea Islands Territory. \nOn this day to celebrate Queensland Day this year\, Queenslanders can share their maroon pride by hashtagging #WeAreQLD on their Facebook or Instagram posts. \nPhotographs can also be uploaded using the WE ARE QLD Tab on the official QLD Day Facebook page. \nThose who share their #WeAreQLD message on or before 25 June 2017 will also go into the draw to win one of four $500 travel vouchers. \nVisit www.qld.gov.au/queenslandday

SUMMARY:38th annual Sunshine Coast environment and community celebrates World Environment Day
DESCRIPTION:Now in its 38th year\, the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) once again hosts the annual World Environment Day (WED) Festival on Sunday\, 4th June at Cotton Tree. \nIt’s a free family friendly party in the park to celebrate all we love about the region’s environment and community spirit. WED has been the celebratory cornerstone for inspiring an ecologically responsible lifestyle and active participation in environmentalism on the Sunshine Coast since 1979.\nFestival goers will be treated to the bangin’ beats of Coast favourite OKA who are headlining the event plus a fabulous line-up of performers. Byron Bay act Sapote\, The Andrea Kirwin Band\, Dan Horne\, The Strangest Dreamers and Sam Hay Music will weave fabulous grooves to create the perfect mood to take in the beauty of the majestic Maroochy River. \nWhether you’re enjoying the entertainment from the comfort of a picnic blanket\, the dancefloor or from the Stone & Wood Jetty Bar\, there are multiple ways to experience Cotton Tree’s famed foreshore ambience.\nThe Festival will have an enhanced focus on the region’s wonderful community groups\, providing participants with ample opportunity to get involved in their area of interest or to discover a new interest! “We’ll have groups there representing all facets of the environment” said Event organiser and SCEC Coordinator\, Leah Hays.\n“Community gardens\, the renewables sector\, permaculture\, coast care\, marine conservation\, wildlife rescue\, sustainable development\, ethical consumerism\, creative industries\, and even surfing. There is an opportunity for everyone!” Festival favourites such as live street art\, an electric car display\, wildlife shows\, craft\, speakers program and a sustainable fashion show continue as features to inform and entertain.\nThis year’s event has adopted the theme “The power of choice is in our hands.” Ms Hays explained. “We chose this theme as it embodies one of the key reasons why we hold this unique award-winning Festival year after year as a beacon of the United Nations international World Environment Day celebrations.\nIt is time to take back our power as people\, and realise that we have the power to create change by simply looking at the choices we make in our everyday lives”\n“We can create cleaner oceans by consuming less plastic\, we can encourage a broad scale switch to renewable energy by divesting money from banks that invest in fossil fuels and we can create a brighter future for our children by simply getting them outside enjoying nature. Humans are both the problem and the solution – it’s our choice as to which one we are.”\nA traditional Welcome to Country will open the Festival\, followed by addresses from Mayor Mark Jamieson and Mayor Tony Wellington. A jam packed speakers program runs throughout the day including environmental experts speaking about everything from the local food revolution\, latest research in the renewables field and how to take part in your own backyard bush care. New to WED this year is a dedicated renewables exhibit showcasing environmental innovation and technology in the business sector.\nChildren will be treated to a host of entertaining and educational craft and musical workshops in the Children’s Forest\, ranging from flower crown making and marigold planting\, to bush critter art and a drumming circle.\n“It’s more important than ever to be informed about what is happening around us both locally and globally. We don’t always need to hold a sign to be an activist\, we just simply need to be ourselves\, discover what we’re passionate about and use this to create a better world.” Miss Hays concluded.\nIf you breathe air\, drink water\, swim in the ocean\, and eat food from the Earth – then World Environment Day is about and for you!\nFor further information visit the World Environment Day Festival website www.wed.org.au or follow on Facebook

SUMMARY:The Annual Chaplains Dinner and auctions at Caboolture RSL on May 22
DESCRIPTION:Its on and hugely anticipated annual night of nights at the Caboolture RSL  called ‘Helping Hope Happen’. \nChaplains do make the world of a difference to a struggling youngster at school – but they can only help if they are there to provide support needed by young students. \nThere are schools in the Caboolture region that can only afford to have their chaplain on-campus for one or two days a week\, and that’s where the Helping Hope Happen chaplaincy dinner steps in to assist. \nThe money raised helps to continue the invaluable work the chaplains do in the local Caboolture & Morayfield area. \nLast year\, the dinner raised $87\,000 for chaplains from Mount Mee to Bribie. This year\, they’re aiming to raise a whopping $100\,000 for the chaplaincy program. \nThe Scripture Union Queensland is the charity which hopes to raise enough funds for a second chaplain for Morayfield East\, as well as continue to support the other 13 schools with a chaplaincy program. \nOne of the steadfast cornerstones of involvement is the generosity of the business community and is looking forward in more businesses becoming part of the night. \nThe event will be held on Monday the 22nd of May 2016 at approximately 6:30 pm at Caboolture RSL ‘chisel room’. If you would like to attend and/or make monetary contributions to the fundraiser\, details will be made available soon. \nThis is a major fundraising event that funds as much as possible for our chaplains who does a terrific job by supporting  students through life at school and beyond. \nThis year the event organiser Robyn Lachmund says she is hoping the work of the chaplains do will help reduce the youth suicide rate in the community. \n\nPreventing even one one young person from going and self-harming or thinking about suicide\, then the job done by chaplains is on the way of making our community better. \n“We have a lot of very troubled young people in our community and young people in schools the chaplain fills the role of being a good listener\, being able to guide them\,” she said. \nThe free dinner event encourages businesses and corporate sponsors to donate and lend a hand for chaplains. \nThere will be auction items up for grabs and donations\, big and small\, are welcome. \nFor those wishing to attend RSVP by May 12 to Janette McConaghy at jettiemac@bigpond.com

SUMMARY:RSPCA Million Paws walk in Moreton Bay Region
DESCRIPTION:It’s Time ! to showcase a family’s best friend as the RSPCA Queensland’s Million Paws walk being held on Sunday May 21 \nWe are all proud owners of pets and Dogs feature greatly in that statistic. \nLast Year the event was held on Bribie Island for the first time following such great success\, organiser Mindy Thorpe is proud to announce it is being held again this year . \nMindy Thorpe says “Last year was amazing around 600 people there with approximately 430 registrations\, and raised about $9100” . \nThis year Mindy will lead the walk from Chamber of Commerce Park 6 Welsby Parade\, Bongaree with her two furry friends\, Mr B and Snugglepot\, on the day registrations will start at 7:00 am \nMeanwhile at Dakabin the walk will start from Sweeney’s Reserve 1 Old Dayboro Road\, Petrie\, with on the day registrations commencing at 8:30 am \nAn RSPCA spokeswoman said last financial year in Queensland alone\, they received 18\,386 cruelty complaints – over a quarter of the national total. \nOriginally conceived by veterinarian Dr Cam Day 23 years ago\, Million paws Walk is the RSPCA’s flagship fundraiser. There are 24 walk locations this year and you can simply visit www.millionpawswalk.com.au to find the walk location closest to you. \nOver 50\,000 animals pass through RSPCA Qld Animal Care Centres every year and well over 14\,000 are dogs that have been surrendered\, abandoned or seized by Inspectors. These dogs are not as fortunate as your much loved family pet. They often need special veterinary and behavioural treatment and they all need to be de-sexed and vaccinated before they have the chance to find a new home. The money raised through the RSPCA Million Paws Walk enables these dogs to receive daily care\, veterinary treatment and funds rehoming programs. The cost to our community for these animals in need is in the millions. \nRSPCA Qld is encouraging everyone to  register for their local walk location and start fundraising today  Even if you don’t have a dog\, you can still join a walk and raise vital funds. Money raised through online fundraising\, the sale of merchandise and activities on the day will help to fund our critical work. \nTaking part in the RSPCA Million Paws Walk is a great way to help animals in need. All animal lovers are encouraged to brush off their walking shoes\, pull out their pet’s leash and bring along their ‘best friend’ to Australia’s leading pet event. \nThis year RSPCA Qld is hoping to raise over $640\,000-money that is absolutely vital. \nThe RSPCA’s  annual operating costs are just under $48 million in Queensland and we receive less than one percent of that figure in Government funding. “So every cent raised helps\,” said RSPCA Queensland spokesperson Michael Beatty. \nVisit the RSPCA website to register\, or arrive early to register on the day.To purchase an official bandanna or cap for the event\, contact at Bribie Island Mindy Thorpe on 0419608077\, or for Dakabin Brendan Croucher on 1410611036

SUMMARY:Commerce Caboolture Can you support The Glassy's? May 18
DESCRIPTION:2017 Glass House Small Business Awards Gala Dinner this Thursday \nCommerce Caboolture are proud to support this year’s Glassy’s with a donation of several annual memberships to the Chamber for some lucky winners.\nGlasshouse Member of Parliament Andrew Powell is seeking a few more $50 or $100 gift vouchers to local businesses to give to Award winners on the night.\nIf you can help\, please contact Vicki Wood on 0402 065 319 ASAP. \n“In Glass House we are fortunate to have over 20 unique townships and each one of these has a varying amount of small family owned businesses that survive solely on the support of their local community.\n“Because I understand how tough they do it\, I initially created these awards as a way to publicly recognise their service and give them some much needed promotion. \nThese awards will highlight what they are doing best and will remind our larger community that shopping local will stimulate economic growth and local employment opportunities. \nThe awards also acknowledge employees who offer exceptional service” – Andrew Powell MP

SUMMARY:Scarborough Originals mark 2 new date Sunday May 7th
DESCRIPTION:The First Scarborough Originals were deemed a great success.  After the onslaught of Cyclone Debbie throughout the week\, the first event was welcomed with clear blue skies and happy music goers at Jamieson Park.\nThe event was well received within the community with well over 400 attending.  Redcliffe Rotary Sunrise ran the sausage sizzle\, a live artist painted side of stage and The ECO ran the live music.   Volunteers rallied to set up\, fundraise and pack down; it was a real community minded event. \nAll ages and walks of life attended with the event proving to be very family friendly allowing parents a more relaxed atmosphere to watch live music and have their children play.  The four bands all brought to the event a style\, groove and originality that was well received with attentive audiences.  It didn’t take long for the dancing to begin and for the groove to take over. \nThose attending were treated to folk\, pop\, blues\, rock\, dub and reggae genres with all bands performing and interacting with the crowds.  All artists were paid and the event was funded through the community and donations.  Mon Komo Hotel came on board as a major sponsor supporting the event and the local community attending dug deep purchasing raffle tickets that assisted in funding the first Originals. The community spirit\, mind and energy was overwhelming. Organisers could not have been more impressed with the generosity of the attendees. \n“It’s so important to bring together the community and under the banner of supporting the local arts scene is such a great way to create a community mind…  Donations are essential to this event\, it is a crowd funded event\, we were impressed with the appreciation and the generosity.  We believe that as long as the community keeps supporting The Originals in Scarborough we can see the event having a long lifespan in supporting the creative scene.”  Kim Ferguson\, Event Co-ordinator.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCheck Out The Scarborough Originals Online

SUMMARY:Heart Week 30 April - 7 May check your blood pressure
DESCRIPTION:City slickers are more likely to let high blood pressure become a “silent killer” than their country counterparts\, with new research showing that millions of Australians are at risk of sudden death from a stroke or heart attack. \nThe Heart Foundation has found a city-country divide in data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics\, with a quarter of Australian adults – or four million people – having high blood pressure that is either untreated or treated inadequately. \nResearchers discovered that while people in the country are more likely to have high blood pressure than those in the city – 39 per cent compared to 31 per cent – they were also more likely to treat the condition (63 per cent to 48 per cent). \nIf residents in regional and rural Australia had the same rate of hypertension as those in our cities\, close to 570\,000 fewer people would have hypertension in these areas\, the analysis found. \nHeart Foundation chief medical adviser Garry Jennings said research had long shown lower indices of health in regional and rural Australia with higher rates of high blood pressure and obesity\, but he was surprised by the difference in treatment. \n“There are fewer people in the city with high blood pressure\, but a great proportion didn’t have it under control\,” Professor Jennings said. \nHe considered a closer relationship between the local GP and patient in regional and rural clinics as a potential explanation\, despite less access to health services than metropolitan areas. \nGarry Jennings. Photo: The Heart Foundation\n“This could tell us something about the health system\,” he said. “I wonder if people in the city are less engaged with the health system for more reason.” \nClose to six million – more than a third of Australian adults – have hypertension. \nAmong those who are taking medication for hypertension\, one in four or 1.4 million\, still have high blood pressure. \nThe condition is the biggest risk factor for Australia’s greatest killers – heart attack and stroke – but is also the cause of other serious illnesses like dementia and kidney disease. \nProfessor Jennings said the ABS data also revealed the most “at risk groups” across Australia\, including men between the age of 55 and 65 and older women. \nThe prevalence of hypertension is higher for Australian men – 35 per cent or three million adults – compared to 32 per cent or 2.9 million women. \nHe said the stats had “flat-lined” in Australia in the past 20 years despite more information about reducing the risks of heart disease such as a healthy diet and exercise. \n“In those groups where we’ve seen falls for decades\, we’re seeing increases again\,” Professor Jennings said. “Men don’t go to the doctors for check ups unless they’re forced along by their partners\,” he added. \nThe Heart Foundation is raising awareness about high blood pressure during Heart Week\, which runs from April 30 to May 7.
