SUMMARY:Queensland Senior’s Week August 19-27
DESCRIPTION:Seniors Week is an opportunity for Queenslanders of all ages to join together and celebrate the valuable contributions of older people. In 2017\, Seniors Week will be celebrated from 19-27 August. \nSeniors Week aims to: \n\nimprove community attitudes towards older people and ageing\nfacilitate community participation and activity by older people\, including those from Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds\nenhance community connections and inter-generational relationships.\n\nSeniors Week is coordinated by the Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland. \n‘Seniors Week is a time for all Queenslanders to acknowledge and celebrate the valuable contributions seniors make in their communities.  Whether as volunteers or in the workforce\, seniors utilize their experiences and knowledge as carers\, grandparents and community leaders. ‘ COTA Queensland  Mark Tucker-Evans  said. \n“For some living in rural and remote communities\, Seniors Week is the one time of year they get to connect with long lost friends. \n“For others\, Seniors Week is a way to assist in combating social isolation through the discovery of programs and activities\, creation of new friendships and in remaining an active member of society. “ \n“We appreciate that Seniors Week can only be a success through the hard work and efforts of people and organisations throughout the state. We are looking forward to working with everyone”   said Mark. \nThe ask: \nGet involved by joining us in challenging the stereotypes of ageing. \nSeniors Week provides the opportunity to highlight the diversity of older Queenslanders.  This year we invite you to participate in our Face of Ageing campaign. \nWe have all heard the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words“.  Your face tells the story of your life. \nWhether the lines on your face are the result of “I laughed a lot” or “I thought deeply” let your story shine through! \nIt’s easy to be part of the Face of Ageing. Simply take a selfie or an elfie (elder selfie) and upload it onto social media or to the Queensland Seniors Week Facebook page with the hashtag #faceofageing and share with us a bit about yourself.  Join us in challenging the ageing stereotype. \nDetails are available on the Queensland Government Portal. \nThis is perfect opportunity to connect generations by getting the whole community involved. \nShow your support on social media by downloading cover and profile images for Facebook and Twitter from our Seniors Week resource section at www.cotaqld.org.au and using the hashtag  #qldseniorsweek when posting about Queensland Seniors Week. \nAre you looking to get involved with events in your community? SUMMARY:World Cat Day is Tuesday August 8
DESCRIPTION:Petbarn Morayfield in partnership with RSPCA Queensland are inviting locals to come down and join in their World Cat Day celebrations on August 8 where they can meet the team and some of the loveable cats available for adoption that are looking for their forever home. \n  \nLocal Morayfield Petbarn Store Manager\, Megan Heaslip\, says World Cat Day is a fantastic way to celebrate the unconditional love and joy that our feline friends bring to us. \n  \n“At Petbarn we are dedicated to finding forever homes for the thousands of adorable cats up for adoption across the country. World Cat Day is the perfect time for us to raise awareness around the importance of pet adoption in saving cat lives\,” said Megan. \n  \n“Cats make wonderful pets as they’re affectionate yet independent. They are renowned for their companionship\, playful nature and self-sufficiency\, making a great addition to any family. If you have been thinking about adding a furry friend to your family\, we encourage you to come down to Petbarn Morayfield on Tuesday 8th August and speak to one of our lovely team members about the adoption process\,” said Megan. \n  \nIf Moreton Bay locals happen to find their purrfect pairing on the day\, they will be able to go through the pet adoption process in-store. Otherwise if locals are not quite ready to make the jump into adopting on the day they are welcome to return anytime throughout the year to make their adoption pledge. \n  \nAll cats and kittens are desexed\, microchipped\, vaccinated and health checked. This gives your new companion a very happy and healthy start to their new life with your family. Importantly\, while the adoption fee set by the local charity is collected by Petbarn\, 100% of the fee is returned to the charity. \n  \nSince the adoption program launched in partnership with a number of local charities\, including RSPCA\, Pets Haven and Cat Haven\, Petbarn stores across the country have saved over 23\,289 animal lives nationally. \n  \nTo find out more or to adopt a pet contact Petbarn Morayfield: \nPetbarn Morayfield\, Shop 10\, 312-344 Morayfield Road\, Tel: 5433 1047 or visit www.petbarn.com.au

SUMMARY:Suicide Prevention Day event on 7 September at Centenary Lakes
DESCRIPTION:The World Health Organization estimates that over 800\,000 people die by suicide each year – that’s one person every 40 seconds. In Australia Lifeline have released statistics stating that for 2015 there were 3027 recorded suicides… more than 8 per day… one every 3 hours. \nResearch also tells us that some 65\,000 think about attempting suicide each year. We also know that the rate of suicide is on the rise. Numbers are at a 10-year high and have increased 25% over the last 5 years. \nThe tragic ripple effect means that there are many\, many more people who have been bereaved by suicide or have been close to someone who has tried to take his or her own life\, as well as those struggling to manage suicidal ideation. \nMany of us in the community have been affected directly or indirectly by suicide. It is devastating to those who are left behind. There are questions\, assumptions and general struggle in coming to terms with why a loved one would take their life. We need to as a community to have those conversations around Suicide prevention.  We need to break down the wall of silence and stigma around Suicide. \nMoreton North Suicide Prevention Network meets with a goal to spread the word about suicide prevention and help remove the stigma relating to mental illness and suicide\, to help people start the conversations with their friends\,  and to raise awareness across Moreton North and surrounding areas. \nEach year\, World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on 10th September. To mark this important event\, Moreton North Suicide Prevention Network together with Roses in the Ocean and Out of the Shadows are hosting a community event at Centenary Lakes\, Caboolture on 7th September 2017. \nOur event will focus on reinforcing the benefits and need for safe and open public discussion about suicide prevention\, will raise awareness of support services within our community and encourage people within our community to listen\, care and seek help. \nCollaboration between government\, community\, health sector organisations and business is imperative to truly create the changes needed to reduce the rate of suicide in Queensland. \nWe invite members of our Community to be a part of this day. To encourage us all to come along and make a stand to stop suicides in our communities\, to save lives and to support and stand beside those who are grieving for their love ones.

SUMMARY:National Pyjama Day Friday July 21 funds Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:The Pyjama Foundation is an Australian not-for-profit charity that gives children in foster care the opportunity to change the direction of their life through learning\, life skills and confidence. \nWith more than 50\,000 children currently in foster care and approximately 32\,250 of these children not completing high school\, it has never been more important to help these disadvantaged children. \nOn Friday 21 July 2017 The Pyjama Foundation is holding its annual National Pyjama Day. \nNational Pyjama Day is all about wearing your best bedtime attire to help The Pyjama Foundation raise much-needed awareness and funds for children in foster care across Australia. Funds raised from the National Pyjama Day event goes towards the recruitment and training of more Pyjama Angels (volunteers) as well as learning resources including books\, puzzles and educational games. \nThis event is our main fundraising event and this year we hope to raise $250\,000 for our mentoring program.
