SUMMARY:Australia’s first Outdoor Classroom Day Thursday September 7
DESCRIPTION:Research finds children spend too much time indoors\, less time outdoors –  Schools and parents unite to host the first Australian Outdoor Classroom Day \n 80% of parents are worried their children are not equipped with the skills they need for the future \n85% of children spend less than two hours playing outside each day \n7 in 10 parents face challenges in getting their children to play outdoors But both kids and parents want more real outdoor play \n August 7th 2017: Aussie primary school kids are not getting enough unstructured outdoor play and are at risk of lacking fundamental ‘success skills’ to overcome and adapt to challenges. \nEvery day\, an overwhelming number of Australian children (85%[1]) spend less than two hours play outside – more than a third (36%) less than previous generations[2]\, according to the OMO Dirt is Good Survey. \nParents and educators are increasingly focused on educational attainment\, skills development and structured activities that promote achievement. While these are important\, ‘success skills’ such as adaptability\, resilience\, creativity and problem solving cannot be learned in the classroom\, but through hands-on\, real life experiences. \nThe research found almost three-quarters (73%) of parents admit that they face huge challenges in getting their children to play outdoors and 80% are worried that their children will not be equipped with the skills they’ll need for the future. \nWhen asked what they value most about their play time\, Aussie primary school kids ranked their iPad or games console (32%) as the things that they enjoy most about their day – more so than outdoor play with friends (25%). With screens outweighing play\, the lack of preparedness for children and the future is at real risk. \nHowever\, the majority of parents (78%) and kids (93%) say they would like more classes to take place outdoors. \nTo help address the decline in outdoor play\, parents and teachers in Australia are rallying together for the nation’s inaugural Outdoor Classroom Day on 7 September 2017\, brought together by Nature Play and powered by OMO as part of the Dirt is Good Campaign. \nOutdoor Classroom Day is a global movement that sees millions of educators celebrating the benefits of both outdoor play and learning.  Across the world over 1.1 million children in 10\,085 schools are involved and enjoying playing and learning outside the classroom. \nOver 70\,000 Aussie kids\, in almost 900 schools\, have signed up for the day\, which shows the scale\, commitment and enthusiasm from Aussie parents\, kids and teachers. \nGriffin Longley\, CEO\, Nature Play said\, “Quite simply\, if children don’t get enough play it can get in the way of them being equipped for the future. \n“Real play helps kids build creativity\, social resilience\, fine and gross motor skills and perseverance[3]) – which are fundamental skills for flourishing in a fast-changing world. \n“Play helps cultivate the ability for children to confront\, tackle and overcome difficult situations and adapt to challenges and\, sometimes\, failures[4]. Through this\, kids are able to develop self-confidence and become more sensitive to the needs of others[5]. \n“These are clearly hugely beneficial skills that children need to master and own for both their todays and their tomorrows\, he said. \nThe virtues of unstructured outdoor play are becoming hugely underrated which urgently needs to be addressed\, especially as only a small proportion of Australian teachers have incorporated regular outdoors time into their classes. Nearly 30% of teachers spend no class time outside and another 30% spend less than 15 minutes outside every week[6]. \nIt seems that the main barriers to outdoor play during the school week are the lack of time between attending daytime classes and participating in after school activities (42%)\, in addition to kids just not being that bothered about playing outside (25%). \n“We’re calling on teachers and parents to get involved in Australia’s first Outdoor Classroom Day on Thursday\, 7th September 2017. Whether that’s by encouraging your child’s school to sign-up to taking a class outdoors\, everyone can do something to make sure Australia’s children reap the benefits of playing and learning outdoors not only on the 7th September\, but every day\,” Longley added. \nCath Prisk\, Outdoor Classroom Day Campaigns Director\, says “Changes in the world and in children’s time have had a negative impact on their access to real play. The ‘screen-time’ generation are at risk of not developing the essential skills they need now and in the future if they are opting to play on their iPads rather than play outdoors with friends. \n“Real play time is free and has significant benefits for children’s development which is why the action for parents and teachers is clear. Give children at least one lesson outside so that they can acquire hands-on\, real-life experiences\,” she said. \nTeachers can register their school at www.outdoorclassroomday.com.au . Additionally\, parents can download resources and get ideas for real play activities with their kids and discover how to get their schools involved in Outdoor Classroom Day on Thursday\, 7th September 2017. \n  \n[1] Pureprofile survey commissioned by OMO in November 2016 amongst 1\,000 parents of kids aged between 5-12 \n[2] Longeran Poll commissioned by OMO in April 2016 amongst 1\,025 parents od kids aged 5-12 years and 1\,025 kids aged 5-12 \n[3] OMO Dirt is Good Global White Paper \n[4] Lester\, S.\, & Russell\, W. SUMMARY:135th Birdsville Races is Australia’s favourite outback bucket-list experience – September 1 & 2\, 2017
DESCRIPTION:From Australia’s most remote horseraces\, to camel pies\, 4WD convoys\, travelling boxing troupes and an influx of thousands to a town that usually homes 115 people – outback Queensland is set to play host to an Aussie bucket-list experience like no other when the 135th Birdsville Races return this September 1 & 2\, 2017. \nTickets to the iconic thoroughbred racing carnival went on sale today through www.birdsvilleraces.com\, with event organisers promising another exhilarating year of punting\, celebration and top-notch racing competition at what many have billed the ‘Melbourne Cup of the Outback.’ \nA two-day racing pass starts at $60 and trackside hospitality options featuring a gourmet outback feast are available. \n2017 is the first year the event has taken on a ticketing partner\, following widespread demand for tickets from within Australia and abroad. \n“The Birdsville Races offer up a unique slice of Australian culture and experience that you really can’t find anywhere else in Australia or the world\,” said Gary Brook\, Vice President\, Birdsville Race Club. \n“Birdsville is remote and that’s what makes the event so special – seeing the horses kick up the red desert dust and the coloured silks of the jockeys as they thunder around the track is truly spectacular.” \nTaking place on the striking red terrain of the Simpson Desert\, the historic Birdsville Races bring more than 7\,000 racegoers of all ages to the Aussie bush for a two-day\, 13-race program\, as well as a jam-packed schedule of outback entertainment and activities. \nProudly supported by Tourism and Events Queensland’s It’s Live! in Queensland major events calendar\, the Races see many visitors flock to Outback Queensland from the beginning of August – setting up camp early to enjoy the region’s yabby races\, street parties and various other events that lead into the big Friday and Saturday race days. \nThroughout the event\, wide open cornflower blue skies and parched red terrain dotted with unique outback flora combine to create a stunning backdrop for the race competition\, while Birdsville transforms into a buzzing hive of activity with film and comedy nights\, live music\, cocktail parties and Fred Brophy’s famous travelling boxing troupe. \n“The Birdsville Races is so much more than a race meet; it’s a destination carnival and celebration of the outback that offers something different for everyone – in a completely unique environment\,” added Gary Brook. \n“Where else in the world would you find thoroughbred horseracing\, gourmet food\, music\, comedy\, film\, fashion\, boxing\, tent cities\, charity fun runs and true-blue Aussie pubs and bakeries? \n“And all in one place\, more than 1\,100 kilometres from any major metropolitan town of city centre? It’s pretty amazing when you think about it.” \nAs in previous years\, outback fare will be a major element of the 2017 Races\, with the Birdsville Bakery serving up its famous selection of curried camel and kangaroo and claret pies. Trackside\, food trucks and gourmet dining vendors will deliver an international flavour to the quintessentially Australian event. \nThe legendary Birdsville Hotel will once again act as the resident watering hole for racegoers wanting to kick celebrations into the night\, while Fashions on the Field will bring colour\, character and couture to race days across six categories for men\, women\, families and novelty dress. \n“Every year\, Fashion on the Fields brings some really interesting outfits out of the woodworks – you’ll always see Akubras\, fascinators and sun hats\, but you’ll get your fair share of surprises as well. And with thousands of dollars in prizes up for grabs\, many racegoers take it very seriously and pull out all of the stops\,” said Gary Brook. \nThe 2017 Birdsville Races will continue its proud support of the Royal Flying Doctor Service\, hosting a 6.1 kilometre fun run to help fundraise for the vital service in their remote region. \nThe Birdsville Races organising committee comprises a network of current and former residents of Birdsville\, all keen to share the magic of the outback races – keeping the event alive and in the psyche of Australian punters. \nEach year\, horses and trainers make the long haul trek to Birdsville\, 10\,000 kilometres collectively\, from places as far away as Darwin\, Tamworth and the Sunshine Coast. Upon arrival\, they set up camp under gum trees alongside the Diamantina River – creating their own community that has become as tight knit as the long-term residents of the rural township itself. \nIn 2016\, the event achieved 121 acceptances to the race-field. History was made when Perth-based jockey Kayla Cross rode to victory on the Heather Lehmann-trained Moore Alpha – the first time an all-female jockey-trainer duo had won the Birdsville Cup in 134 years. \n What:                   Birdsville Races \nWhere:             Birdsville\, Queensland \nWhen:                  Friday 1st & Saturday 2nd September 2017 \nHow much:       Starting from $60 \nMore info:          www.birdsvilleraces.com \nNamed after its abundant birdlife\, the town of Birdsville is situated on the edge of the Simpson Desert in Far West Queensland. Birdsville is known as one of the most isolated towns in Australia. \nEuropean explorers first settled into the area in the 1870s\, and the first race meeting was held a mere 12 years later.  The town was settled as a toll point for stock crossing the Queensland/South Australian border with a population of 300 pre-federation\, which dropped to 100 after federation. Birdsville now supports pastoralists\, cattle and tourism. \nThe first Birdsville Races was held in September 1882. Since then\, the Races have only been cancelled twice\, and they’ve continued to grow in size. \nIn 2016\, the Races were condensed into a ‘Super Sunday’ program\, which combined 11 highlight races from the originally scheduled Friday and Saturday competitions. The 11-race program made for Australia’s biggest single thoroughbred race day this year\, outstripping Melbourne Cup day. \nThe revised program followed 55mm of rainfall in Birdsville in the days preceding the race meet\, which equated to more than a third of the town’s yearly rainfall average. The deluge turned Birdsville’s iconic red racetrack to sludge and forced the closure of all roads to and from the township. \nIn its 135th year\, the event has earned an impressive reputation and worldwide recognition. \nPopulation (before/during the race): \nThe town population stands at around 115 when no event is being held. \nThe population grows to between 6\,000 and 7\,000 during race time. \n Location: \nBirdsville is 1\,590 kms west of Brisbane\, 1\,940kms from Sydney\, and 1\,193kms from Adelaide. It is located on land traditionally owned by the Wangkangurru Yarluyandi people\, in the Channel Country of Far West Queensland\, Australia – on the edge of the Simpson Desert. \n Primary Industry: \nCattle farming has historically been the main industry for Birdsville\, however in recent years tourism has grown to be one of the town’s primary sources of income. \nHow to get there: \nDrive your own car or hire a 4WD for some sand dune fun. \nThere are buses that operate from capital cities for special occasions like the Birdsville Races\, and there are limited flights in and out of Birdsville on REX Airlines\, with additional flights added around race time. \nAccommodation Options during race week: \n\nBirdsville Caravan Park\nTent City (Set up only during race time!)\n\n Town Attractions \n\nBirdsville Bakery\n\nHome of the famous Camel Pie!\nThe Birdsville Bakery serves up a selection of Aussie classics – with their menu listing everything from a bowl of Weetbix or baked beans on toast\, to wattle seed custard tarts and a pie menu that includes curried camel and kangaroo and claret.\n\n\nThe Birdsville Hotel \n\nA legendary hotel that has stood on the edge of the Simpson Desert for years. It is located next to the airstrip and offers accommodation (outside of race week)\, hearty meals and cold beers for a true blue Aussie outback experience.\n\n\nThe Birdsville Track \n\nA famous 4WD track just outside of Birdsville.\n\n\n‘Big Red’ \n\na 40-metre high sand dune on the edge of the Simpson desert that challenges locals and tourists alike to get to the top of it to watch a spectacular sunset.\n\n\nDiamantina River\n\nGreat for a dip or a spot of fishing.\n\n\nBurke & Wills Camp site \n\nMarked by a party following in the footsteps by of the famous explorers. It is marked with a prominent blazed tree ‘C76 1860’.\n\n\nThe Waddi Trees\n\n6km to the north of Birdsville is the location of the largest patch of Waddi Trees (also known as Acacia Peuce)\, one of only three such spots in the world.

SUMMARY:Seniors Week in Queensland 19-27 August 2017
DESCRIPTION:Queenslanders of all ages will unite August 19-27\, 2017 to celebrate the many contributions older have made in their communities.  This year’s Seniors Week continues the theme  It’s on for young & old to further develop intergenerational connections within your community. \n‘Seniors Week is a time for all Queenslanders to acknowledge and celebrate the valuable contributions seniors make in their communities.  Whether as volunteers or in the workforce\, seniors utilize their experiences and knowledge as carers\, grandparents and community leaders. ‘ COTA Queensland  Mark Tucker-Evans  said. \n“For some living in rural and remote communities\, Seniors Week is the one time of year they get to connect with long lost friends. \n“For others\, Seniors Week is a way to assist in combating social isolation through the discovery of programs and activities\, creation of new friendships and in remaining an active member of society. “ \n“We appreciate that Seniors Week can only be a success through the hard work and efforts of people and organisations throughout the state. We are looking forward to working with everyone”   said Mark. \nThe ask: \nGet involved by joining us in challenging the stereotypes of ageing. \nSeniors Week provides the opportunity to highlight the diversity of older Queenslanders.  This year we invite you to participate in our Face of Ageing campaign. \nWe have all heard the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words“.  Your face tells the story of your life. \nWhether the lines on your face are the result of “I laughed a lot” or “I thought deeply” let your story shine through! \nIt’s easy to be part of the Face of Ageing. Simply take a selfie or an elfie (elder selfie) and upload it onto social media or to the Queensland Seniors Week Facebook page with the hashtag #faceofageing and share with us a bit about yourself.  Join us in challenging the ageing stereotype. \nThis is perfect opportunity to connect generations by getting the whole community involved. \nShow your support on social media by downloading cover and profile images for Facebook and Twitter from our Seniors Week resource section at www.cotaqld.org.au and using the hashtag  #qldseniorsweek when posting about Queensland Seniors Week. \nAre you looking to get involved with events in your community? Visit the online events calendar to see what’s on in your area.  Events are being added weekly and I invite you to visit often. \nKey Facts and Figures \n\nCOTA Queensland coordinated the first Seniors Week in Queensland the 1960s – back then it was called Old People’s Week … how times have changed\n1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 65 in Australia live alone\nSeniors Week is a way to assist in combating social isolation\nSeniors Week brings Queenslanders of all ages together\nIt’s the largest week long seniors’ celebration in Queensland\nThere are some really fun events including music and dancing\, trivia competitions\, art and road shows \, story telling\, art exhibitions and even a mock Olympics\nYou don’t have to be old to attend\nYou don’t have to be young to have fun\nIt’s on for young & old
