Celebrating Queensland seniors virtually in August
August 15, 2020 - August 23, 2020
For the first time in its 60-year history, Queensland’s annual celebration of seniors will be a virtual celebration from Saturday 15 – Sunday 23 August 2020.
This year more than ever people need something to celebrate, albeit in the safest way possible. That is why we will transform Seniors Week from physical gatherings into an online affair. If restrictions allow there may be some physical events as well.
As Covid-19 regulations has seen many older people in self-isolation, never has it been more important to ensure people remain connected and don’t become segregated.
To do so, Queensland Seniors Week will be working outside the box and are looking to launch a full calendar of events.
“Seniors Week has always been a great opportunity for Queenslanders to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds and we want to make sure that continues this year, even if many of them are having to do it from their own home,” said Mark Tucker-Evans, Chief Executive, Council on the Ageing Queensland, which coordinates the government-funded Queensland Seniors Week.
“While it may be a time for physical distancing, we want Virtual Seniors Week to be a time of great social interaction, bringing people together in unique ways they may not have tried before.”
Using platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Zoom and Instagram Live, the new-look event, to be held throughout 15-23 August 2020, will require the skills of entertainers and those in the arts to provide virtual shows, fitness industry experts to hold exercise classes, chefs to host cooking demonstrations and much more.
