Queensland Day Tuesday 6 June 2017

June 6, 2017

  • « 38th annual Sunshine Coast environment and community celebrates World Environment Day
  • Dakabin State High School Open Day Tuesday June 6 »

Queensland Day is a celebration of the state’s birthday and its official separation from New South Wales on 6 June, 1859.

A proclamation was read by George Bowen on 10 December 1859 whereupon Queensland was formally separated from New South Wales.

Queensland became the Colony of Queensland and the colony was named for Her Majesty Queen Victoria.

Queensland was the only Australian colony that commenced immediately with its own parliament, instead of first spending time as a Crown Colony (i.e. having a Governor appointed by The Crown).

The Colony of Queensland existed as a colony of the British Empire from 1859 to 1901.

Following 1 January 1901 the Colony of Queensland ceased to exist and became the State Of Queensland under Dominion of Australia and later as the Commonwealth of Australia.

While as the Colony of Queensland at its greatest extent,  included the present day State of Queensland, the Territory of Papua and the Coral Sea Islands Territory.

On this day to celebrate Queensland Day this year, Queenslanders can share their maroon pride by hashtagging #WeAreQLD on their Facebook or Instagram posts.

Photographs can also be uploaded using the WE ARE QLD Tab on the official QLD Day Facebook page.

Those who share their #WeAreQLD message on or before 25 June 2017 will also go into the draw to win one of four $500 travel vouchers.
