Australian travellers must get a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK from 8 January 2025. Your passport must be valid for your entire stay, and you may need to apply for a UK visa if you plan to stay for longer than six months. Before travelling, check the Smartraveller website for the latest travel advice and register your travel details.
Entry Requirements

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA):
Most Australian passport holders will need an ETA to travel to or transit through the UK. You cannot board your flight without it, so apply and get approved before your trip.

Passport:
Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your planned stay in the UK.
Visa:
If you intend to stay for longer than six months, you will need to apply for a visa.

Pre-Travel Checklist

1. Check Smartraveller:
Visit the Smartraveller.gov.au/ website for the United Kingdom website for the most up-to-date travel advice and to subscribe to alerts.

2. Apply for an ETA:
Go to the official UK government website to apply for your ETA, ensuring you have it approved before your flight.
3. Check Visa Requirements:
Confirm you don’t need a visa for a short-term visit or for any longer-term stay.

While You’re There

Be aware of your surroundings:
The Smartraveller website advises exercising a high degree of caution due to the risk of terrorist threats.

Consular Assistance:
Ensure you enter the UK on your Australian passport to be eligible for Australian consular support if you encounter any issues.
