Proposed park name to honour McDonald legacy

Moreton Bay Regional Council has unanimously endorsed an application to name a Burpengary park in honour of one of the area’s longstanding community volunteers, Ruth McDonald.

Division 2 Councillor Peter Flannery welcomed the proposal to name the park on Rossini Street at Burpengary after Ruth, who was instrumental in establishing a number of community events and volunteered her time with local community groups and charities.

“You can’t mention the Burpengary Community Association or the Burpengary Christmas Spectacular without immediately thinking of Ruth,” Cr Flannery said.

“For two decades, Ruth played an vital role in in the community association, serving as its treasurer for nine years and then as its president up until 2014.

“Ruth was dedicated to building Burpengary’s sense of community spirit and commenced the annual Christmas fun day, which is still held every year.

“She was always willing to put her hand up and also served as booking officer for the local hall and as a volunteer with the neighbourhood watch.

Outside of her work with the community association, Ruth also helped charities like Meals on Wheels and Lifeline.

“This proposal is a fitting way to remember Mrs McDonald’s outstanding contribution to Burpengary, and to making it the place it is today.”

Council is now seeking public feedback on the proposal. The public submission period closes 5pm, July 25.
