Counselling service Laurel Place now in Caboolture South to assist victims of sexual assault

With Caboolture one of the nations hotspots for sexual and domestic violence, the tools neccessary to combat this scourge and offer victims a place to go for one on one support has arrived in for the form of Laurel Place on Morayfield road.

Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan said this morning on Morning Magazine that this is a game changer in how sexual and domestic violence assistance to victims can be delivered more quickly and as a stepping stone to addressing awareness issues in the community.

Mark Ryan MP, also said Laurel Place would receive $260,000 this year to operate a local sexual assault service.

Mr Ryan said previously such a service was only available via the phone.

Laurel Place Inc. (formerly S.C.S.A.S.V.Inc.), more commonly known as Laurel House in Maroochydore and Laurel Place in Gympie & Murgon, runs programs aimed at reducing sexual assual assault in the community, and provides caring and effective support for victims.
Their Vision is for Communities free of Sexual Violence, while the mission is to educate our communities on the prevention and awareness of sexual assault issues, providing interventions to people affected by sexual violence and developing collaborative relationships with individuals, organisations and communities.

Providing specialised counselling support, information and education in relation to sexual abuse/assault within the Sunshine Coast, Cooloola and Moreton Bay areas.

As part of the service counselling for adults, children and young people who have experienced recent or past sexual assault, counselling for non-offending parents/carers and supporters of people who have experienced sexual assault, counselling for children 12 years and under who display sexual behaviour problems,    Specialised Counselling intervention for adolescents who have sexually abused,

There are also Group programs,  community Education (including Let’s Get Savvy for High School students), information and resources on sexual assault and legal, medical, and court procedures, an Indigenous Community Liaison Worker who is available to work collaboratively with counselling staff in providing support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families.

All Services at Laurel Place Inc. are provided free of charge thanks to funding received from Department of Communities – Child Safety.

Referrals to the Children’s Program are made from Department of Child Safety, Qld Police Service, or other Government Department.  Referrals for the adolescent offender program can only be made by Department of Child Safety or Youth Justice Conferencing.  Self-referrals can be made to the adult service.
