Charitable Aussies donate $7 billion

AUSTRALIANS donated almost $7 billion to charities last year, but not-for-profit groups earned a remarkable $103 billion, a new report shows.

The first Australian Charities Report was released on Friday and revealed the full economic impact of the not-for-profit sector in the economy.

It showed the biggest 5% of charities reaped 80% of the sector's total income last year.

About 44% of all 37,242 registered charities earned between $50,000 and $250,000 last year, while just 130 charities reported more than $100 million in income.

Australian Charities and Not-For-Profit Commission chairwoman Susan Pascoe said charities spent $95 billion on their purposes, with an extra $8 billion set aside for future charitable investment.

She said the data showed most charities were operating with a balanced budget.

"Some charities were even able to achieve a surplus, highlighting that the sector as a whole is healthy and sustainable," Ms Pascoe said.

More than one million people were employed in the sector in 2014, and another two million volunteered.
