Melbourne Cup: Cup field revealed with Excess Knowledge, The United States gaining last places

The 24-horse field has been announced for the Melbourne Cup, with the Gai Waterhouse-trained Excess Knowledge and Lloyd Williams' The United States grabbing the last available places for Tuesday's big race.

Excess Knowledge earned automatic entry with its win in the Group One Lexus Stakes on Derby Day, while The United States was the beneficiary of stablemate Amralah's misfortune.

Amralah was withdrawn from the race on Saturday by owner Lloyd Williams, after advice that a substance provided to the horse under vet's treatment would be out of the horse's system in 14 days proved 'negligent,' according to Williams.

The Godolphin horse Secret Number, the Darren Weir-trained Dandino and New Zealand horse Pondarosa Miss were the three to miss out at 25, 26 and 27 in the Cup order of entry.

The final field shows that an equal-record number of international horses will take part in this year's Cup.

There will be 11 internationals in the field - including Japanese race favourite Fame Game - matching the number who started in the 2011 edition of the race, won by French galloper Dunaden.

"This year it means that there are more here than there is prize money down to 10th. So we respect the fact they've taken up the challenge," Racing Victoria's Michael Burn told Channel Seven.

"Certainly, the quality of the international horses this year is particularly strong."

Of the Australian trainers, Chris Waller leads the way with three entries - Preferment, last year's third-placed horse Who Shot Thebarman and Grand Marshal.
