Help bring joy to domestic violence survivors this Christmas
All Queenslanders are being encouraged to make a donation this festive season to support people who have experienced domestic and family violence, as part of a new Christmas appeal.
Minister for Women, Shannon Fentiman has launched the Christmas Care Appeal 2015, which is presented in partnership by the Queensland Government, 612 ABC Brisbane and Queensland Rail.
“Sadly, we know that some women and their families have to flee their homes and rebuild their lives to escape domestic and family violence,” Ms Fentiman said.
“In some cases they might leave with only the shirts on their backs, and this means they may not have essential household items or Christmas presents for their children.
“The aim of this appeal is to support these women and their children to rebuild their lives – whether it’s Christmas gifts, homewares or school items for 2016.
“I’m often asked by Queenslanders what they can do to help people experiencing domestic and family violence – this is a practical way to provide support to those who have suffered violence and abuse.
“Leaving a violent and abusive partner can be extremely frightening and a donated gift can be a small symbol of care, support and hope.”
The Christmas Care Appeal, which aims to reach a target of 10,000 gifts this year, will run until 4 December with donation points across the state.
Ms Fentiman said the Christmas season could be a particularly volatile one in some homes, and domestic violence incidences often increased during this time of year.
“We want women to know that there is support available to them if they leave violent and abusive relationships,” she said.
“To put a stop to domestic and family violence we need a determined community effort and the backing of all Queenslanders.
“Through this appeal we can show domestic violence survivors that we support them while helping them start a new and safer life for themselves and their children.”
