The Hon. Joe Hockey former Treasurer to bid farewell to Parliament on Wednesday
Joe Hockey will deliver his valedictory speech in parliament this on Wednesday, ending his 20 year political career.
The former treasurer indicated he intended leaving politics shortly after Malcolm Turnbull replaced Tony Abbott as prime minister in September.
Mr Hockey first entered parliament in 1996 when John Howard was swept to power as prime minister.
The member for North Sydney's resignation from parliament will trigger a by-election in his safe Liberal seat.
Leader of the House Christopher Pyne told Sky News there is still 'plenty of time' for a by-election to replace Mr Hockey before the end of the year.
Mr Pyne says the electorate of North Sydney should be without a member for as 'short a time as possible'.
Mr Hockey is widely tipped to be appointed Australia's next ambassador to the United States.
