Park trail to honour father of modern day Samford
Moreton Bay Regional Council has unanimously endorsed an application to honour the father of the Samford Show and local rural fire service, Laurence ‘Laurie’ Balfour.
Division 11 Councillor Darren Grimwade welcomed the proposal to name the Samford Parklands’ eastern trail after the longstanding resident and former CSIRO caretaker, and said Laurie had been a mainstay of the Samford community ever since his family moved to the valley in 1939.
“Samford wouldn’t be what it is today without Laurie,” Cr Grimwade said.
“His work establishing the Samford horse gymkhana as a member of the local P&C gave birth to the modern Samford Show. And it was his passion for the valley that was also the catalyst for the local rural fire service, which still services our community to this day.
“For three decades Laurie was caretaker of the Samford CSIRO site and lived at Cash House with his wife Maureen during that time.
“This is a fitting way to remember Mr Balfour’s outstanding contribution to the local community and his lasting impact on modern day Samford.”
Council is now seeking public feedback on the proposal. Submissions close 5pm Wednesday, 10 October 2018.
