Road upgrade for Albany Creek business & education hub

Moreton Bay Regional Council has announced a $1.3 million upgrade for Albany Forest Drive to boost road safety and reduce congestion at the entrance to one of the region’s largest high schools and business hubs.

Division 9 Councillor Mike Charlton said council will upgrade a 260m section of Albany Forest Drive outside Albany Creek State High School (ACSHS), and install traffic signals at the intersection with Jagora Drive together with improved pedestrian crossings and an additional right turn lane from onto Old Northern Road.

“Council has worked with local businesses, residents and ACSHS to come up with a final design that will improve traffic flow during drop off and pick up times and peak shopping periods, and make sure that the school’s 1200-plus students can get to school as safely as possible,” Cr Charlton said.

Works will also include new asphalt surfacing, a 2.5m-wide shared path from Old Northern Road to Edwards Drive and raised traffic islands.

Division 10 Councillor Matt Constance said construction will commence in December, with the majority of the upgrade expected to take place during the school holidays, and be complete by April 2018, weather permitting to minimise the disruption to the school community and local business.

“This is a bustling business hub, and I’ve asked that as part of the works, on-street parking also be retained for local businesses to ensure there remains a convenient pull-up location for local shoppers,” Cr Constance said.

“This is an important investment in boosting road safety and busting school-time congestion in our community, and it’s why it forms part of council’s overall $87 million investment towards roads and transport for 2017/18.”
