Applications open for Unitywater Graduate Program

You’ve got to take a few risks in order to succeed. That’s according to Dan Armstrong, who is a Performance and Reliability Team Leader at Unitywater.

Dan started at Unitywater as a Vacation Student in 2013 and was then successful in being offered a position in the first Graduate Program.

“I found this very appealing as a recent graduate because I didn’t know which direction I wanted to go in my career,” Dan said.

Applications are now open for Unitywater’s 2018 Graduate Program, offering rotations through different business areas through a three year development program for successful candidates.

This year, the program is expanding beyond Engineering positions to include Finance, Business Insights and People & Culture graduates.

Dan, who has a Dual Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) and Commerce (Accounting) degree said the Graduate Program was a great start.

“I was given many opportunities to present projects to executive managers and committees and even had some interaction with the CEO and Board,” he said.

Halfway through the program, Dan accepted an opportunity as a Team Leader for mechanical and electrical maintenance.

“Leading a large team of seventeen direct reports was a challenge which allowed me to develop strong team leadership skills and provided me with valuable experience in maintenance operations,” he said.

Two years later, he moved into project work and was then seconded as a Logistics Team Leader.

He recently started his latest role as Performance and Reliability Team Leader in Network Operations.

“I’ll be developing new ways to run our network more reliably and efficiently for our customers,” Dan said.

“I have been very fortunate with opportunities during my time at Unitywater, however it’s also involved a lot of hard work and the willingness to take a few risks. I enjoy taking on new challenges and stretching my potential.”

He said working with like-minded people contributed to his sense of job satisfaction.

“Unitywater has a great community feel and positive working environment which makes it a great place to work,” he said.

“It also allows me to have a great work-life balance.”

Unitywater Executive Manager Kenan Hibberd said Dan was a great example of where Unitywater’s Graduate Program could lead.

“Dan has been promoted as a result of his excellent leadership qualities and field experience,” he said.

“His latest appointment to a critical Network Operations position is a testament to Unitywater’s commitment to the development and progression of young talent through the organisation.”
